Often referred to as "Marine DEF," AUS 40 or DEF 40 is often used in high-combustion diesel engines, such as those used by water-based craft. Although, this higher concentration of urea (40%) and water (60%) is finding increasing use in many land- and locomotive-based applications.
The aqueous urea solution AUS 40 decreases nitrogen oxide emissions from the exhaust system of a vessel or a diesel engine. The solution is injected into the diesel engine exhaust system before the selective reduction catalyst, and emissions are transformed to water vapour and nitrogen as a result of the solution's interaction with nitrogen oxide gases.
