DEF Fluid is a solution for diesel engines that have been used in heavy vehicles since 2006 and light vehicles since 2014. Despite this, there are still some matters to certain misconceptions regarding what it’s made of. Contrary to what you might think, Diesel Exhaust Fluid is not made from urine. In the article, there are some of your answers to this common misconception about the difference between DEF and Urine.

Urine or DEF?

Urine is a watery and typically yellowish liquid that flows from the kidneys through the urethra to the urinary bladder. This fluid contains nitrogen compounds such as urea and other waste substances removed from the blood.

Human urine contains the following substances:

Human Urine Substances Amount (gr/L)
Urea 9.3 gr/L
Chloride 1.87 gr/L
Sodium 1.17 gr/L
Potassium 0.750 gr/L
Creatinine 0.670 gr /L

Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a colorless, non-hazardous, aqueous solution made up of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. DEF fluid is a solution injected into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles to turn harmful emissions such as NOx gasses into nitrogen and water (harmless ones). This system has been called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) since 2010.

Peeing in a DEF Tank Is a Popular Misconception!!!

Some similar compounds, such as urea in diesel exhaust fluid and human urine, have caused misunderstandings. Human urine contains a much different urea content than DEF fluid. Urine also contains more compounds and an abundance of ions and minerals that the SCR system cannot handle, which are inappropriate. Based on the chemical makeup, human urine has 95% water while DEF has 67.5% deionized water.

Diesel exhaust fluid requires demineralized and deionized water. So, a highly specialized filtration device is needed. Although diesel exhaust fluid and urine have urea and water, they are not interchangeable.

Conclusion

So, is DEF fluid made of urine? Definitely Not!

DEF fluid is made of 67.5% demineralized water and 32.5% urea. Urea is not exactly the same as urine; it is just one of its components. So, no human or animal urine can be used in diesel engines. Remember that you cannot make Adblue; it should be produced through a chemical reaction (ammonia + natural gas).
